The Los Angeles Police Department is dedicated to finding qualified and focused individuals searching for a unique experience in law enforcement. LAPD continues to update and improve their training, techniques, safety, and community efforts to allow each officer to have the skills and resources they need to be successful.
On this page, you will find information regarding the Divisions, and Career openings, within the Los Angeles Police Department and what is offered throughout the City of Los Angeles and how these are used throughout today’s policing! We are excited to see you and your interest to “Protect and Serve” within the City of Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles Police Department Patrol Division offers the ability to stay full-time as a Patrol Officer to continue to show police presence and assistance throughout the city while continuing to grow within the department.
We have currently two full-time patrol divisions at our West Bureau (Venice/West LA Area) and at our Central Bureau (Downtown/Central LA area).
The Los Angeles Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU), uses a variety of training courses and certifications such as Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, DUI, Grappler, and more to enforce California Traffic Law and assist where needed. TEU provides much needed assistance with pursuits and vehicle accidents, as well.
The Traffic Enforcement Unit has its operations out of our West Bureau.
The Los Angeles Police Department’s Harbor Division is focused on police enforcement throughout the City of Los Angeles in open waters, beaches, canals, and parks with the use of specialized off road and marine vehicles.
Within the Harbor Division, they provide Search and Rescue for assistance statewide and a Dive Response Team.
Harbor Division Station is at the Santa Monica Pier, and is under the Special Operations Bureau.
Our Metropolitan Division (Metro) comprises several specialty units within the Los Angeles Police Department.
Some of these units include Patrol, Special Weapons and Tactics, Detectives, K-9 and Explosive Ordnance Disposal. These units work in coordination with our other Los Angeles divisions to support daily operations throughout the city.
Metro Division is under the Special Operations Bureau.
The Los Angeles Police Department’s Investigations Division is made up of several highly trained investigators. They are trained to investigate narcotics, homicide, financial crime, auto theft, and special victims cases.
There are two sub-divisions within Investigations - Robbery/Homicide and Street Crimes Unit.
Investigations has a station in East LA and is under the Special Operations Bureau.
The Los Angeles Police Department’s K9 Division uses diversified and in-depth training for officers with the assistance of a Canine (K9) for deployment during patrols and responses. LAPD K9 officers are trained with their K9’s for drug sniff and searches, suspect locating, and suspect takedown. Each officer is assigned their own K9 to oversee, take care of, and work beside during their service.
The K9 Division has its operations out of our Central Bureau.
Through advanced technical and field training - The Los Angeles Police Department's Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit is well equipped to serve for all high-risk on-call responses with its hand selected team. LAPD SWAT is able to assist in a variety of specialized operations including Explosives Ordinance Disposal, barricaded suspects with offensive entry, multi-entrance attacks, air unit ‘hotdrops’, and advanced weapons takedowns to ensure any all-call scene can be brought to the safest and quickest end.
SWAT is under the Special Operations Bureau, and SWAT Alpha Team is part of Metro Division.
The purpose of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Air Support Division (ASD) is to provide aerial assistance and surveillance to enhance public safety and law enforcement efforts within the city of Los Angeles. These units currently use helicopters to support ground operations by offering rapid response, search and rescue capabilities, traffic monitoring, pursuit assistance, and a bird's-eye view of critical situations, thereby aiding in crime prevention, apprehension of suspects, unit coordination, and disaster response.
Air Support Division is under the Special Operations Bureau.
The Los Angeles Police Department’s Transit Services Division has a two-fold area of concern. It provides transportation of detained individuals during operations and large police presence situations and provides safety and security for the City of Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) landmarks, and passage and movement of MTA vehicles. Transit Services uses Prisoner Transports, Patrol Vehicles, and police bicycles to help maintain safety and security.
Transit Services Division is under the Special Operations Bureau.
